COURSES OFFERED:

SUR3331 - Photogrammetry & SUR3331L - Photogrammetry Lab

Credits: 2 (lecture), 1 (lab)

Photogrammetry is the science of making measurements and maps from photographs (images). This course deals with the principles of precise measurement and proper data reduction through measurements from aerial photographs followed by calculations to determine spatial information such as 3-D coordinates and city plans. This course covers elementary techniques of photogrammetry, establishing the foundation for the subsequent, advanced photogrammetry course, SUR4350.

Instructor: Dr. Gamal Seedahmed (gseedahmed@ufl.edu) Ph: (954) 577 6305

Note: The Photogrammetry Lab (SUR3331L) can be taken statewide, but will require one or maybe two meetings at the Gainesville campus or either of the Research and Education Canters at Fort Lauderdale or Plant City. Statewide students who are not able to attend the Gainesville campus or either of the RECs, should contact Dr. Seedahmed before registering.

SUR3501 - Spatial Measurement Systems & SUR3501L - Spatial Measurement Systems Lab

Credits: 2 (lecture), 1 (lab)

This course is geared towards learning by-doing. In particular, students will develop analytical skills for determining the spatial quality and error budgets associated with a variety of ground-based geomatics technologies. Specifically, students will:

Learn how to analyze data from total station, Lidar, laser level

Develop project reporting skills through project reports

         Learn about recently developed technologies

Analyze different types of GPS units.

Develop baseline data for a monitoring project.

Analyze the spatial quality of map information.

Instructor: Dr. Gamal Seedahmed (gseedahmed@ufl.edu) Ph: (954) 577 6305

Note: The Spatial Measurement Systems Lab (SUR3501L) will most likely require the student to meet at the Gainesville campus or either of the Research and Education Canters at Fort Lauderdale or Plant City, but it may be possible to make arrangements for statewide students (e.g. those in the panhandle) to take the lab. In either case, statewide students who are not able to attend the Gainesville campus or either of the RECs, should contact Dr. Seedahmed before registering.

SUR3520 - Measurement Science

Credits: 3; Prereq: MAC 2233, STA 2023, and SUR 3641 or equivalents.
Theory of measurement errors, error propagation, variance and covariance, polynomial curve fitting, regression analysis, correlation and least squares adjustment.

Instructor: Dr. Ahmed Mohamed  (amohamed@ufl.edu) Ph: (352) 392 3465

SUR5625 - Geographic Information Systems Analysis (graduate student course)

Credits: 3; Prereq: introductory GIS course
Analytical tools such as software grid modules, database query, map algebra, and distance operators; analytical operations such as database query, derivative mapping, and process modeling; sources and nature of uncertainty and error, and project planning management.

Instructors: Dr. Scot E. Smith (sesmith@ifas.ufl.edu) Ph: (352) 392 4990 and Dr. Hartwig H. Hochmair (hhhochmair@ufl.edu)

REGISTRATION INSTRUCTIONS:

1. You must be a registered UF student to take any of these courses, however, there is a shorthand process for “non-degree” students.  You will be classified as a “0AG” student- a non-degree in the College of Agriculture.

      2.      To register: go to http://www.cals.ufl.edu/distance/

Go to http://www.cals.ufl.edu/distance/course_database.aspx to find the SUR prefixed courses. For non-degree students, follow the instructions under “non-degree seeking student.” Review “critical dates and deadlines.”  Pick “Spring, 2008 semester.”   START YOUR ADMISSSTIONS AND REGISTRATION NOW TO ENSURE BEING IN THE COURSE.   Pick “application.”  Follow the instructions to complete and submit the application along with the course(s) you wish to take. (Most of the info is to prove your Florida residency for lower tuition rates.)    After admissions/registration you will get and MUST have a “GATORLINK ID” and password for access to the ONLINE “e learning” website for the course.   Be sure to pay your tuition fees by the deadline.   Tuition is about $320 (resident).  If you need help with registration please contact our Academic Services Coordinator Ms. Miranda Funk (maefunk@ufl.edu) Ph: (352) 846 0847.

TO COMPLETE THE COURSE:

Log into the UF website for “e learning” http://lss.at.ufl.edu using your GATORLINK ID and password.  View the video “tutorials”, review the “lecture outlines”, participate in the discussion sessions, take the progress quizzes, submit the assignments, take the final exam.  All must be completed by the end of the Spring 2008 term.
