Computer Lab Manual

The Geomatics program faculty, labs and instructional facilities are housed in Reed Laboratory, located near the center of the main UF campus in close proximity to other academic and student service areas. The classroom, labs and faculty offices occupy the third floor and portions of the second and fourth floors of the building. The Geomatics Program also has access to the School of Forest Resources and Conservation facilities- specifically, two conference rooms, one classroom a GPS lab and, a media laboratory- in Newins Zeigler Hall.

Classroom Space

The program has one teaching class room which is under direct control (no other university classes are held there). It is equipped with a computer workstation, an overhead projector and a video playback system. The classroom can accommodate up to 40 students. In case of conflicts or large enrollment, classrooms are allocated through the regular university process.

The program also has access to classrooms maintained by the IFAS IT department that utilize state of the art Polycom technology, thus enabling our faculty at remote campuses to teach courses to students at the main campus.

Laboratory Space

The program maintains two computer laboratories in Reed Lab. The AutoCAD lab is equipped with 12 workstations and the GIS/Remote Sensing/Photogrammetry  Lab  is equipped with 12 high precision workstations. The GIS course is taught in the CALS GIS Laboratory in McCarty Hall.

The following software is installed and generally used in the Geomatics Computer Labs.

Microsoft Office 2007

ArcGIS 9.1 and related software Extensions

Leica GPS

VR Mapper from Cardinal Systems

Adobe Acrobat

AutoDesk 2007 with Land Development Desktop

Erdas Imagine 8.7

The students also have access to a large scale color Epson Stylus plotter, three laser printers and two photocopy machines.

Program Library:

Located at 304 A Reed Lab, the collection has grown over the years and now holds many rare and invaluable books and journals. A large part of the collection is made up of donations from our alumni and other friends of the program.

Student Access to Space and Instruments/Equipment

The labs are accessible to all Geomatics Students as well as students from other departments taking any SUR titled courses. Access to the Geomatics Network is strictly controlled and only those students who are currently taking SUR classes are able to log in.

Please refer to the computer lab policy manual for more details.

Students may use the labs during regular working hours (8 A.M- 5 P.M), during scheduled lab times- if they run beyond 5 P.M or check out a key from the program assistant if they need to burn some mid night oil!

Students also have access to the equipment room but typically under the supervision of a faculty member or a teaching assistant. All the equipment is secured in lockers within the equipment room.
